Commentary
Right then, the Lucknow Super Giants pulled off a remarkable turnaround to defeat the high-flying Gujarat Titans, and this win will do wonders for their confidence. That’s all from us here in Lucknow, but we are not done yet on this double-header Saturday. Over in Hyderabad, the Punjab Kings have opted to bat first against the Sunrisers and have raced to 53 runs in just 3 overs. Switch tabs and join us there for all the action. Cheers!
Aiden Markram is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant knock of 58 runs from 31 balls. Shares that it was a slow start to the season, but after a couple of good knocks, he is now feeling much better. Mentions that with a packed schedule and changing conditions, there is a lot to take in, but he feels it's all about sticking to your game. Says that as a player, you always end up going back to your strengths. Emphasizes the importance of staying true to your game, and if the team benefits from it, that’s the most important thing. States that the deck did change a bit, and the lights coming on made a difference in easing the pitch.
Rishabh Pant, the victorious skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants, says he is pleased with the win, and they, as a team, are just taking one match at a time and believing in the process. Mentions that the idea was to bowl a lot of yorkers and into the wicket slower ones and the way the bowlers came back was special. Further says that he is feeling better with every game and spending more time in the middle just helps a player. Lauds Nicholas Pooran and says he is happy to have somebody of that class in his team and he reads the game well and doesn't just keep slogging.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
The holder of the Orange Cap, Nicholas Pooran, is in for a chat. Mentions that he is not too concerned about the Orange Cap, as it is all about the team’s wins. He describes that it was a beautiful wicket to bat on. He knows they have solid batting depth but stresses the importance of stitching partnerships. Emphasizes the need to understand what is required at different stages of the innings and how to approach the task at hand while also targeting specific bowlers.
Shubman Gill, the skipper of Gujarat Titans, says the wicket wasn't the easiest one to bat on from ball one and losing quick wickets didn't help their cause. Further adds that while batting first, the balls were sticking a bit, but the strike rotation was a concern that they will have to fix going ahead. Mentions the conversation was always to look for wickets, but after the halfway mark in the second innings, there was some dew, which eased the pitch. Concludes that to have taken the game so deep is a good positive that shows their fighting spirit.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan dominated the proceedings for the Titans with a 120-run opening stand. Everything seemed to be going smoothly for GT while the duo was out in the middle, but once the partnership was broken, the tide turned dramatically. LSG stormed back into the contest, conceding just 60 runs and picking up 6 wickets in the final 8 overs. Ravi Bishnoi took a bit of tap in the first couple of overs but came back well to finish with a couple of wickets.
The way Pooran was batting, it looked like the Super Giants would complete the chase with an over or two to spare, but the Titans managed to take the game down to the final over after Pooran fell. GT could never really build any significant pressure with the ball, and not much went their way after they let it slip with the bat. However, they will take heart from the fact that they fought till the end and made the contest closer than it seemed at one point.
With Mitchell Marsh unavailable for the game due to personal reasons, Rishabh Pant stepped up to open the innings alongside Aiden Markram. While Pant found it tough to get going, Markram wasted no time in finding his rhythm, dispatching a few early boundaries to set the tone. He was given a life on 28, and made Gujarat Titans pay dearly for that miss. Though Markram eventually fell, Nicholas Pooran took charge and kept the chase on track with a commanding performance.
Third win on the trot for the Lucknow Super Giants! This one will feel particularly satisfying, given the character they showed to turn things around after GT were cruising at 120/0. The Gujarat Titans’ four-match winning streak comes to an end, and they will be kicking themselves for not making the most of the strong platform laid by their openers. Missed opportunities in the field didn’t help either for Shubman Gill and his men.
