WhatsApp Voice and Video Calling Coming to PC and Laptop Users
Meta is expanding WhatsApp's functionality by testing native voice and video calling features on its desktop web clients, according to a report from WABetaInfo released on Monday. The feature is being tested on both Windows and macOS versions of the standalone WhatsApp desktop applications.
New Calling Options for Desktop Users
This upcoming feature is set to enhance the experience for users who frequently use WhatsApp on laptops or desktop systems. Once released, it will allow individuals to make and receive both voice and video calls without needing to reach for their smartphones, ensuring seamless communication across devices.
Feature Supports Companion Device Integration
It's important to note that WhatsApp desktop clients do not allow direct logins. Instead, they work as companion devices, linked to a user’s main account. WhatsApp currently permits linking up to four companion devices, which can include smartphones, desktops, or web-based sessions.
Currently, voice and video calls are only supported through WhatsApp’s mobile app. With this update, that limitation will be lifted, expanding calling capabilities to connected companion devices. However, Meta has not yet confirmed whether browser-based web clients will receive the same functionality.
Expected Rollout and Access Points
The feature is in its beta testing phase and will likely be released to the broader user base in the coming weeks. Once activated, users will see a call icon in the top right corner of their desktop app interface. The update will also support incoming calls, making WhatsApp a more convenient communication tool for users working on computers.
Sticker Reactions Under Development
In a related update, WhatsApp is also developing sticker-based message reactions. This new expressive feature will go beyond traditional emoji responses and allow users to react to messages using stickers. It is still under development and is expected to be introduced soon.
