WhatsApp to Introduce New Feature, Motion Photos on Android for More Interactive Sharing
WhatsApp is reportedly working on adding support for motion photos, a feature that has long been available on many Android smartphones. Motion photos capture a brief clip with movement alongside a still image, enhancing the way moments are preserved.
According to a recent report by WaBetaInfo, the messaging platform is internally testing this functionality for Android. While Apple’s iPhones have a similar capability called Live Photos, WhatsApp’s current tests appear to be focused solely on Android.
With motion photos gaining widespread popularity, WhatsApp seems to recognize the potential of integrating this feature to cater to a larger user base. The development was spotted in the latest WhatsApp Android beta version (2.25.8.12), accessible to beta testers.
Once implemented, motion photos will appear in the Gallery section when sharing media with contacts. At present, only JPG and PNG files are visible in this tab. The rollout is expected to expand as more beta testers gain access to the update.
In related news, Telegram founder Pavel Durov has once again criticized WhatsApp, calling it a "cheap, watered-down" imitation of his messaging app. Durov has consistently accused WhatsApp of copying Telegram’s features, claiming that Meta’s financial backing enables this replication. He argues that most of WhatsApp’s newer functionalities are borrowed from Telegram.
We’ll continue monitoring updates as WhatsApp progresses with motion photo support and other developments.
