WhatsApp Introduces Username Feature To Safeguard Phone Number Privacy
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature designed to boost user privacy . The messaging platform is preparing to launch an advanced username feature that will be paired with a PIN support system, labeled ‘Username and PIN.’ As per the information from WABetaInfo, this new feature will let users replace their phone numbers with a distinctive username, offering an added layer of privacy.
A leaked screenshot from a source indicates that WhatsApp is testing the username feature, which is intended to enhance the protection of phone number s. This update will allow users to manage their privacy more effectively by opting to use a username instead of a phone number when engaging in new conversations.
At present, the feature is available to users on WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.2. However, those using the stable version of Android will have to wait until the feature is included in a forthcoming update.
By choosing the ‘Username’ option, users can conceal their phone numbers, making only their usernames visible to others in their profile. Additionally, WhatsApp is developing an optional PIN code feature that will add an extra privacy layer for those interacting with unfamiliar contacts. Users can create a four-digit PIN, which can be shared with select individuals. This PIN will be necessary for others to connect with the user on WhatsApp.
Although this feature provides greater control over privacy, it does have some limitations. Notably, even with the PIN feature enabled, those who already have your phone number can still contact you. However, the option to use a username instead of a phone number will be available for initiating new chats.
This upcoming feature is entirely optional and aims to give WhatsApp users more control over who can connect with them. It ensures that only the people the user chooses can initially reach out through their username.
