WhatsApp Introduces New Limits on Broadcast Messages to Combat Spam
WhatsApp, the popular instant-messaging platform owned by Meta, is set to introduce new restrictions on the number of broadcast messages users and businesses can send. According to a report by TechCrunch, the platform will impose limits on monthly broadcast messages “in the coming weeks.”
This move is seen as an effort to reduce the volume of spam broadcast messages that users often receive. WhatsApp has already implemented measures to curb spam, such as limiting the number of marketing messages businesses can send daily. The new restrictions on broadcast messages are expected to further enhance user experience by minimizing unwanted content.
Meta has clarified that individuals and businesses looking to reach larger audiences will need to explore alternative tools like Status and Channels. Currently, WhatsApp Business users enjoy unlimited broadcast messaging, but Meta is reportedly planning to launch a paid version with advanced features for businesses.
In the coming months, Meta will test new functionalities tailored for businesses, including customized broadcast messages for product updates and holiday sales, as well as the ability to schedule messages. Additionally, WhatsApp will pilot a program offering merchants 250 free customized messages, with additional messages requiring payment. The pricing for these extra messages has not yet been finalized.
Earlier this month, WhatsApp began testing a feature that organizes replies into threads, making it easier for users to follow conversations. The platform is also developing a functionality that allows users to disable their camera before answering a video call.
These updates reflect WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to balance user convenience with effective spam control, while also exploring monetization opportunities for its business users.
