Storage Full? Here's How Disabling Virtual RAM Can Free Space on Your Android

While Android phones often provide sufficient storage for images, videos, and apps, users sometimes find their devices running low on space. If this sounds familiar, disabling virtual RAM on your Android might help free up some of that valuable storage.

Virtual RAM, designed to keep apps ready in memory for quicker performance, typically occupies between 4GB to 12GB of storage. On devices with more than 8GB of RAM, which is standard in many mid-range models, this extra memory might not provide significant benefits. However, virtual RAM can enhance performance on devices with 4GB or less of RAM, so keeping it enabled is recommended in these cases. For everyone else, here’s how to turn it off on popular Android brands.

Disabling Virtual RAM on Oppo , OnePlus , and Realme Devices

On Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones, virtual RAM is referred to as " RAM Expansion ." To disable it:

  • Open your phone’s ‘Settings’ app and select ‘About device.’
  • Look for the “RAM” section, and tap on “RAM Expansion.”
  • Turn off the toggle, restart your device, and enjoy your newly freed-up space.
  • Turning Off Virtual RAM on Vivo Devices

For Vivo phones with FuntouchOS, virtual RAM is labeled as “Extended RAM.” Here’s how to disable it:

  • Open the ‘Settings’ app and tap on “RAM & storage space.”
  • Go to the ‘RAM’ option, then turn off the toggle for “Extended RAM.”
  • Restart your phone to complete the process.
  • Disabling Virtual RAM on Samsung Devices

On Samsung devices, virtual RAM is called “RAM Plus.” To adjust or turn it off:

  • Open the ‘Settings’ app and go to ‘Device care.’
  • Select ‘Memory,’ scroll down, and tap ‘RAM Plus.’
  • Here, you can select how much storage to allocate as RAM or disable the feature entirely.

By following these steps, you can manage storage more efficiently and possibly improve your Android device’s performance by reclaiming unused space allocated to virtual RAM.
