Google’s AI-driven assistant, Gemini, which is set to replace Google Assistant , may soon offer a new feature allowing users to make phone calls and send texts without unlocking their devices.

In a recent APK teardown of the latest beta version of the Google app by Android Authority, it was discovered that Gemini might soon handle phone calls and messaging, even when your phone remains locked. This function appears to bring more seamless interaction with the device.

While Gemini has already inherited many functions from Google Assistant, some users feel that it still falls short, especially when it comes to adjusting system settings or performing specific actions. However, this new addition may elevate its overall usefulness, particularly in communication tasks .

Like Google Assistant, users will need to manually activate the option before they can take advantage of calling and texting from the lock screen. Since Gemini's capabilities are currently somewhat restricted, this enhancement could be a major step forward in reducing the reliance on Google Assistant for certain tasks like initiating routines.

This feature can be found as a toggle labeled "Make calls and send messages without unlocking" under the "Gemini on lock screen" section in the app's settings. However, even with this option turned on, Google clarifies that Gemini will still require users to unlock their phones when dealing with personal content, such as emails in Gmail.

Alongside this functionality, Google appears to be testing some design changes, including a more streamlined Gemini overlay that enhances text visibility by expanding vertically. Moreover, the tech giant is categorizing Gemini's extensions into sections such as Communication, Device Control, Travel, Media, and Productivity. Additionally, Google is testing an image resizing feature that enables users to generate images in various aspect ratios.
