Netflix To Remove ‘Downloads’ Feature On Windows Next Month: What Users Need To Know
In a strategic move, Netflix is set to bid farewell to its current Windows 11 and Windows 10 app lications, paving the way for a progressive web app (PWA) to take their place. While this transition promises enhanced streaming quality and access to live events within the upcoming Windows app, it also signals the end of support for offline viewing .
Presently, the Netflix app for Windows 10 and Windows 11 facilitates downloads of favorite shows in up to 1080p (FullHD). However, a recent support document update on the platform's website indicates a shift, stating, "downloads will no longer be supported, but you can continue to watch TV shows and movies offline on a supported mobile device." Consequently, downloads will be limited solely to mobile and tablets.
Furthermore, the updated Netflix app for Windows will integrate support for the 'ad-supported' tier. This tier, which offers content at a reduced price compared to standard plans but includes commercial breaks, may pose limitations due to licensing constraints on certain titles.
Currently, the Netflix Windows app does not accommodate the ad-supported plan, displaying a message indicating, "Your plan does not support streaming on this device." Notably, the ad-supported tier remains unavailable in regions like India, prompting users to revert to mobile devices for offline viewing.
Although specifics regarding the release date of the new app remain unclear, Netflix assures users with automatic updates enabled via Microsoft Store that the transition will seamlessly integrate the new version upon its release.
