Instagram 's support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) video has been well-received by iPhone 12 and newer model users. Now, in a collaborative effort with Samsung, Meta has unveiled the 'Super HDR' feature for the Galaxy S24 series , enhancing the experience of uploading and viewing native HDR photos. Surprisingly, this feature has quietly made its way to eligible iPhones as well.

Contrary to the Android counterpart, you don't necessarily need the latest iPhone model to engage with HDR photos on Instagram. Users with iPhone 12 or newer models can seamlessly upload and view HDR photos, as highlighted in a recent report by Greg Benz Photography.

HDR photography entails capturing images with a broader dynamic range, typically encompassing 12 or more stops. Such photos exhibit enhanced brightness and vividness compared to standard images. When viewed on smartphones, HDR photos appear notably vibrant within the user interface.

Modern iPhones offer the capability to capture HDR images in both JPEG and HEIC formats. Furthermore, users can enjoy viewing these pictures in HDR quality on MacBook devices equipped with an M1 or newer processor.

However, it's essential to note that any alterations made to an image captured on an iPhone will revert it to a Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) image. Similarly, applying filters to the image will also result in an SDR rendition. The HDR feature only applies to images captured directly from the phone's native camera app. This functionality has been successfully tested on an iPhone 15, delivering the expected results.
