Google's Pani Puri Game Doodle: A Tribute to India's Street Food Delight

Today's celebration of pani puri on Google's Doodle coincides with a remarkable achievement made on this day in 2015. A restaurant in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, secured a place in the Golden Book of World Records for serving an astonishing 51 unique pani puri flavors to its delighted customers. This record-breaking feat showcased the diverse and imaginative variations that can be found within the realm of pani puri.

The Origins and Legend of Pani Puri

According to a popular legend, the origins of pani puri can be traced back to the time of the Mahabharata, where Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, ingeniously created this bite-sized delight. Facing a scarcity of resources during their exile, Draupadi utilized leftover aloo sabzi (potato curry) and wheat dough to concoct a snack that could satiate the hunger of all five Pandava brothers. This innovation gave birth to the bite-sized pani puri, satisfying the appetites of the warriors.

Gol Gappa, Puchka , and More

Pani puri, known by various names, enjoys regional variations throughout India. In North Indian states such as Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and New Delhi, the popular street food takes the name 'gol gappa,' featuring small puris filled with potato and chickpeas, paired with jaljeera-flavored pani. In Odisha, natives call it ‘Gup-chup’. In West Bengal, Bihar, and parts of Jharkhand, it is known as 'puchka' or 'fuchka,' with tamarind pulp taking center stage in the mouthwatering combination.
