Amidst the surge in popularity of generative AI in 2023 , OpenAI 's ChatGPT emerged as a frontrunner in the AI revolution. Available seamlessly across diverse platforms, including PCs and smartphones, accessing this intelligent tool became more convenient with the introduction of the dedicated ChatGPT app .

However, the initial setup required users to manually launch the app each time they sought assistance. OpenAI aims to streamline this process by potentially allowing users to designate the ChatGPT app as the default assistant on their Android phones.

A recent APK teardown by Android Authority uncovered intriguing code within the latest iteration of the ChatGPT app—version 1.2023.352. This code, labeled "com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity," hints at an upcoming feature enabling users to set ChatGPT as the default assistant on Android devices.

Although currently disabled by default, manual activation of this code reveals an overlay on the screen, featuring an animated voice prompt from the ChatGPT app. This indicates the potential for users to effortlessly engage the voice chat function from any screen, seeking prompt responses to their queries.

Notably, the feature seems to encounter technical issues, as instances of crashes have been reported, suggesting it might still be in the developmental phase or undergoing refinement. It is anticipated that future iterations of the ChatGPT app from OpenAI might incorporate this functionality once it's robustly operational.

Further exploration into the app's code reveals evidence of ongoing development, such as the addition of an XML file named "assistant_interaction_service." This file encompasses a "voice-integration-service" tag, delineating the sessionService and recognitionService, reinforcing the notion that ChatGPT's integration into Android as a default assistant is actively in progress.

In addition to this anticipated feature, OpenAI has introduced a Quick Settings toggle for the ChatGPT app, providing users with swift access to its functionalities. This development signifies the continuous efforts to enhance user experience and accessibility within the app.

As OpenAI continues to evolve ChatGPT, the prospect of setting it as the default assistant on Android devices holds promise, promising a more seamless and integrated AI experience for users seeking instant assistance across various contexts.
