Amazon Kindle To Discontinue MOBI File Support: What You Need To Know
Amazon issued a warning to Kindle users this week, alerting them to significant alterations set to take effect next month. In a message to recipients, Amazon details the impending modifications regarding the compatibility of certain file formats with Kindle, effective November 1, 2023. The notice reads, "This is a final reminder that on November 1, 2023, we will start winding down support for sending MOBI (.mobi, .azw, .prc) files through Send to Kindle."
These adjustments will primarily impact Kindle users who rely on the feature to send MOBI files through email or Kindle apps on platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac .
Amazon explains that MOBI is an outdated file format lacking support for the latest Kindle features. As a result, the company is transitioning to contemporary formats to extend the usability of Kindle e-books previously stored in the MOBI file format. Amazon underscores that Kindle users will need to resubmit their files in new compatible formats, like EPUB (.epub), which will remain functional through the Send to Kindle for Email feature.
For current content stored on Kindles in MOBI format, Amazon assures users that it will remain unaffected and not be removed due to this change. Nonetheless, it is advisable to convert MOBI files into the newly supported Kindle formats, as there's a possibility that data in MOBI format could eventually be removed from the platform. The communication from Amazon also specifies that all support for sending MOBI files to Kindle will cease entirely by December 20, 2023.
While there's no need for alarm, with less than a month until the deadline, it is prudent to discontinue the use of these older formats. Amazon provides users with the option to visit their help page or contact the customer service team for any clarifications regarding this impending change.
