Shubman Gill Becomes Fastest Batter to 2500 ODI Runs, Surpassing Hashim Amla
Star Indian opener Shubman Gill etched his name in history on Wednesday, February 12, by becoming the fastest cricketer to reach 2500 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Playing his 50th ODI for India against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gill surpassed former South African great Hashim Amla , who had set the record in 53 innings.
Achieving the Milestone in Style
Gill needed just 25 more runs to reach the milestone and accomplished it with a boundary off the fifth ball of the 10th over, bowled by Gus Atkinson. His remarkable consistency in ODIs continues to make him a standout performer in international cricket.
Consistent Performances in the England Series
The right-handed batsman has been in exceptional form throughout the ongoing ODI series against England. In the first match at Nagpur’s Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium on February 6, he scored 87 runs off 96 balls. He followed it up with a solid 60 off 51 deliveries in the second ODI at Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium on February 9.
Gill’s ODI Dominance
With a batting average exceeding 60, Gill remains a crucial player for Team India. He aims to convert his promising start in the third ODI into a significant score, helping India secure a series whitewash before heading to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Surging to No. 2 in ICC Rankings
Ahead of his innings in the third ODI, Gill climbed to the second spot in the ICC ODI rankings for batters, surpassing Indian captain Rohit Sharma. “Gill has 781 rating points, whereas Rohit has 773 rating points,” marking a significant shift in the rankings.
Chasing Babar Azam for the Top Spot
Pakistan’s Babar Azam currently holds the No. 1 position with 786 rating points. The 30-year-old batter is also on the brink of a milestone. “Like Gill, Babar is playing an ODI match on Wednesday, and if the right-handed batter manages to score at least 33 runs for Pakistan against South Africa in Karachi during the third match of the tri-series, he will become the fastest batter in the world to score 6000 runs in ODIs.”
A Bright Future for Gill
Gill’s latest record adds to his growing stature in world cricket. With his consistent performances, he continues to establish himself as one of the most promising talents in the game. As he gears up for future challenges, fans eagerly await more record-breaking innings from India’s rising star.
