A Glance at the Orange Cap’s Illustrious History
Since its introduction in the 2008 IPL season, the Orange Cap has been claimed by some of cricket’s finest batsmen. The first winner was Australia’s Shaun Marsh, who scored 616 runs for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Over the years, modern-day legends like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Virat Kohli have etched their names into this elite list.
One of the most unforgettable performances came from Virat Kohli in IPL 2016, where he amassed a record-breaking 973 runs—the highest ever in a single IPL season. His campaign included four centuries, a feat yet to be matched. Shubman Gill (890 runs in IPL 2023) came closest but fell short of Kohli’s monumental tally.
Chris Gayle holds a unique distinction as the only player to win the Orange Cap in back-to-back seasons (2011 and 2012). Meanwhile, David Warner stands out as the only three-time winner (2015, 2017, 2019).
In IPL 2024, Virat Kohli reclaimed the Orange Cap with 741 runs, becoming only the third player to win it multiple times.
Rare Feats: Orange Cap & IPL Trophy in the Same Season
Only two players have achieved the rare double of winning both the Orange Cap and the IPL title in the same season:
- Robin Uthappa (2014 – Kolkata Knight Riders)
- Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021 – Chennai Super Kings)
Indian vs. Overseas Dominance
In the 17 completed IPL seasons, Indian batsmen have won the Orange Cap seven times, while Australians lead among overseas players with six wins. The legendary Sachin Tendulkar (2010) was the first Indian to claim the cap after Australians Shaun Marsh (2008) and Matthew Hayden (2009) set the early benchmark.
As IPL 2025 unfolds, fans eagerly await to see if a new star emerges or if a past champion reclaims the coveted Orange Cap.
