In 1628, Shah Jahan, dubbed ‘the King of the World’, ascended the Mughal Empire throne deeply enamoured with his queen, Mumtaz Mahal, whom he called the ‘Chosen One of the Palace’. Poets in Agra's Mughal court marvelled at her beauty, claiming it made the moon blush in shame.

At the zenith of Mughal prosperity under Shah Jahan's reign, India's abundance of gems enriched his power. Yet, in 1631, he suffered the loss of Mumtaz Mahal during childbirth. Legend holds that her dying wish bound him to erect the most magnificent tomb in her honour.

Shah Jahan spared no expense in fulfilling his promise, mobilising 20,000 artisans from India, Turkey, and Iraq to construct the Taj Mahal in Agra's verdant gardens along the Yamuna River. Between 1631-1648, under a team of architects, they transformed his vision into reality.
