Often enjoyed with jalebi, this snack is a staple at Gujarati households and is also a popular street food item. Making Fafda at home may seem daunting, but with the right recipe and guidance, you can enjoy this mouthwatering delicacy in the comfort of your own kitchen. In this article, we'll take you through an easy step-by-step recipe for making famous Gujarati Fafda at home.


Ingredients You'll Need- Here's a list of ingredients you'll need to prepare Fafda:

For the Fafda Dough:
  • 2 cups of Gram Flour (Besan)
  • 1/4 cup of Fine Semolina (Sooji)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Carom Seeds (Ajwain)
  • 2 tablespoons of Oil
  • Salt to taste
For Frying:
  • Oil for deep frying
For Garnish:
  • Red Chili Powder
  • Sesame Seeds (Til)
  • Chopped Coriander Leaves
Instructions:
1. Preparing the Fafda Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the gram flour (besan), fine semolina (sooji), baking soda, asafoetida (hing), carom seeds (ajwain), and salt.
  • Add two tablespoons of oil to the mixture and mix it in thoroughly.
  • Gradually add water to the mixture to form a smooth, firm dough. Knead it well for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes pliable. The dough should not be too soft or too stiff.
2. Shaping the Fafda
  • Divide the dough into small, equal-sized portions.
  • Take one portion of the dough and roll it between your palms to create a cylindrical shape.
  • Place the dough cylinder on a clean surface and flatten it using your fingers or a rolling pin. Roll it out thinly to create a long strip.
  • Use a knife to cut the strip into thin, long pieces. These pieces are your Fafda.
3. Frying the Fafda
  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan or kadai over medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of dough into the oil. If it sizzles and rises to the surface, the oil is ready.
  • Carefully slide the prepared Fafda pieces into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches.
  • Fry the Fafda on medium heat until they turn golden brown and crispy. This should take approximately 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even frying.
  • Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried Fafda from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
4. Garnishing and Serving
  • While the Fafda is still hot, sprinkle red chilli powder , sesame seeds (til), and chopped coriander leaves over them. You can adjust the spiciness according to your preference.
  • Allow the Fafda to cool down for a few minutes before serving. They are traditionally served with jalebi or a spicy chutney for a delightful sweet and savoury contrast.
