The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has officially come into effect from April 8, 2025, following the assent of President Droupadi Murmu . A formal announcement from the Centre confirmed the implementation of the Act.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 (14 of 2025), the Central Government hereby appoints the 8th day of April, 2025 as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force," the official statement said.

The legislative process concluded after a heated round of discussions in Parliament. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on Friday with 128 members voting in favor and 95 opposing, after nearly 17 hours of deliberation. Earlier in the week, the Lok Sabha had cleared the bill following an intense 13-hour debate.

This amended law is aimed at restructuring the management of waqf properties across India. It focuses on enhancing transparency within waqf boards and ensuring fair representation from various Muslim communities. Key provisions of the Act also include safeguarding cultural heritage sites, expanding social welfare efforts, and promoting economic empowerment of underprivileged groups - particularly Muslim widows and divorcees.

Despite its broader objectives, the Act has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who allege it could fuel social divisions.
