Sanjay Mehrotra , the President and CEO of Micron Technology, a semiconductor player, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat's Gandhinagar. During their meeting, they discussed the US-based company's intentions to strengthen the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem within India.
With the primary objective of attracting investments in India's emerging semiconductor ecosystem , the three-day 'SemiconIndia 2023' conference commenced in Gandhinagar on Friday, graced by the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi .
The conference, now in its second edition, is organized by the India Semiconductor Mission in collaboration with various industry associations and partners. Its core objective is to establish India as a prominent global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development. Notably, SemiconIndia was previously hosted in Bengaluru last year.
The theme of the Conference is 'Catalysing India's Semiconductor Ecosystem'.
"I thank PM Modi for the vision to make India a global hub for semiconductors...Micron is committed to building a semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat. We estimate that our project in Gujarat will create nearly 5000 direct jobs and additional 15,000 jobs in the community. We are hopeful that this investment will help catalyse other investments in the sector...Digital India and Make in India are creating a truly transformative energy that will continue to drive positive progress...," said Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO, of Micron Technology, speaking at the event.
Micron Technology announced plans to invest up to USD 825 million in India during Prime Minister Modi's recent US visit. The investment aims to build a new semiconductor assembly and test facility with support from the Indian government.
Micron chose Gujarat's SANAND Industrial Park (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation - GIDC) as the location for its investment due to its robust manufacturing infrastructure, favorable business environment, and reliable talent pipeline.
The phased construction of the new assembly and test facility in Gujarat is anticipated to commence in 2023. Micron envisions the start of Phase 2, which involves building a facility of comparable scale to Phase 1, to begin in the latter half of the decade.
