If you happen to receive torn or dirty notes from an ATM , there’s no need for concern. The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) has established clear guidelines for replacing such notes, and banks are obligated to assist you.

According to the RBI, dirty notes are defined as those that are torn or soiled but have clear serial numbers visible on both sides. Notes with a denomination of ₹10 or higher that are in two parts are also considered dirty, as long as the tear does not cross through the number panel.

How to Replace Torn Notes

You can easily exchange torn notes by visiting any public sector bank, the currency chest branches of private banks, or the issuing offices of the RBI. If you have up to five notes, they can be replaced directly at the counter. However, if you have more than five notes or if the total value exceeds ₹5,000, it’s recommended to submit them at the currency chest branch associated with your bank account.

Exchanging Dirty Notes

Dirty notes can also be exchanged at any of the aforementioned banks without the need to fill out a form. If you present up to 20 notes with a combined value of ₹5,000, the bank will replace them at the counter without any charge. For amounts exceeding ₹5,000 or more than 20 notes, the bank will accept them and process the exchange at a later time. If the total value of the notes exceeds ₹50,000, the bank may implement additional verification procedures, and service charges may apply.
