Nari Shakti Shines: PM Modi Shares Photo With Women MPs Celebrating Rajya Sabha's Approval Of Women's Reservation Bill

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a heartwarming moment with the women members of Parliament following the successful passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister posted a picture and captioned it with these words: "Had the honor of meeting our dynamic women MPs who are absolutely thrilled at the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam . It's gladdening to see the torchbearers of change come together to celebrate the very legislation they have championed. With the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, India stands at the cusp of a brighter, more inclusive future with our Nari Shakti being at the core of this transformation."

The Upper House of the Indian Parliament deliberated on the bill for an exhaustive 11 hours before passing it with resounding support. The bill aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. Notably, the Lok Sabha had already given its approval on Wednesday, with an overwhelming 454 MPs voting in favor and just two MPs opposing it. These two MPs, from the AIMIM, opposed the bill due to its lack of specific provisions for reserving seats for Muslim women. In contrast, in the Rajya Sabha, there were no abstentions during the voting.

The passage of the Women's Reservation Bill is of significant historical importance as it marks the first bill to be passed in India's new Parliament building. Following the successful vote, Rajya Sabha Chairperson and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar remarked, "This is a historic achievement, and my heartfelt congratulations go out to all. It's also worth noting that today coincides with PM Modi 's birthday according to the Hindu calendar." Prior to the vote, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha, setting the stage for the momentous decision.

In the wake of the bill's passage, Prime Minister Modi celebrated the occasion, calling it "a defining moment in our nation's democratic journey." He extended his gratitude to all 140 crore Indians and thanked the Rajya Sabha MPs for their unanimous support for the Women's Reservation Bill, highlighting the heartening unity behind this historic legislation.
