The Indian government is gearing up to tackle a growing menace—hoax bomb threats targeting airlines. A recent spate of false bomb alerts has disrupted flight operations, inconvenienced passengers, and burdened airlines with hefty operational costs. To counter this, the government is introducing stricter rules and enforcement measures.

Rise in Hoax Bomb Threats

Over the past week, more than two dozen Indian carriers have received false bomb threats, mainly through social media platforms. Despite all threats proving to be hoaxes, they have caused significant disruptions, grounding flights and straining security agencies. The government has already blocked or suspended around 10 social media accounts, most of them on X (formerly Twitter), which were involved in posting these threats. Flights of Air India Express , Vistara , and Indigo were among those affected by the alerts.

Government's Response
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that the government is considering amendments to regulations to curb these threats. While some of the individuals behind the threats have been identified as minors or pranksters, authorities are taking every case seriously. Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the incidents and coordinating with airlines and security agencies to tighten security protocols.

Delhi Police 's Cyber Investigation
The Delhi Police has taken a leading role in the investigation, writing to social media platforms for details of the accounts involved. It is suspected that these threats were posted using VPNs or dark web browsers, making it challenging to trace the culprits. A specialized team from the Delhi Police's cyber cell, along with the Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit, has been deployed to track down the perpetrators.

Stricter Measures on the Way

To prevent further disruptions, the government is planning to introduce more stringent laws. Those involved in making false bomb threats may face severe penalties, including being added to a no-fly list . Airlines and security agencies are also in discussions to increase the presence of air marshals on flights and enhance screening procedures.

As hoax bomb threats continue to plague Indian airlines, the government is determined to take action. With stricter rules, enhanced investigations, and better security protocols, authorities aim to ensure safer skies and uninterrupted travel for passengers.
