Cash on Wheels: Indian Railways Introduces India’s First Train ATM on Panchvati Express – All You Need to Know
In a groundbreaking move to enhance passenger convenience and explore innovative revenue streams, Indian Railways has introduced an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) onboard a moving train for the first time ever. The pilot project has been rolled out on the 12110 Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express in Maharashtra, offering travelers a unique banking facility while en route.
A video showcasing this novel feature was shared by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on his official X account, drawing attention to the pioneering step towards smarter rail services.
' ATM On Wheels ': A New Age Initiative
Launched under the Railway Board’s broader vision to increase non-fare revenue, the “ATM On Wheels” initiative reflects the Indian Railways’ intent to blend innovation with service enhancement. The concept was tabled during a high-level vendor meeting held on March 25, 2025. Subsequently, the trial ATM installation was successfully conducted on April 10, 2025, onboard the Panchvati Express.
Utilizing the train’s mini pantry area, the mechanical team ingeniously converted the space to securely house the ATM. “The ATM was properly secured for its maiden journey with rubber pads and bolts for vibration isolation. Two fire extinguishers have also been provided in the allotted space,” Indian Railways stated.
