Madonna's Triumphant Comeback: A Look At The Celebration Tour's London Opening Night
Following the opening night of The Celebration Tour in London on Saturday (Oct. 14) at the O2 Arena, it's official: Madonna has made her triumphant return.
Despite facing a near-death experience, the Queen of Pop managed to dazzle the audience with a two-hour-plus performance packed with chart-topping hits, captivating lesser-known tracks, and a handful of unexpected surprises. Remaining as candid as always, Madonna fearlessly addressed her hospitalization in June, resulting from a "severe bacterial infection," which subsequently delayed the opening of her Celebration Tour by three months.
“I didn’t think I was going to make it,” she declared bluntly at one juncture during the evening. “I forgot five days of my life — or death, I didn’t really know where I was.” Madonna recounted, acknowledging that it was her family who ultimately helped her pull through.
“My children were there — and my children always save me every time.” Referring to it as her "survival secret, Madonna disclosed that she simply repeats to herself, “I have got to be there for my children – I have to survive for them.”
During the tour's debut in London, five of her children, namely Mercy James, David Banda, Lourdes, Esther, and Stella, graced the stage alongside her. It appears that going forward, at least four of her children will accompany her each night as performers.
Also accompanying her on the tour is Bob the Drag Queen, a winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race and an emerging legend in LGBTQ comedy. Narrating Madonna's arrival at LaGuardia airport in the late '70s with only $35 in hand to conquer New York City, Bob playfully threw a bundle of cash into the audience at the beginning of the show, dryly quipping, “Use this and become a star.”
