Sanjeeda’s role as Waheeda in Heeramandi is deeply intricate, portraying a woman betrayed by both her family and destiny. The series, now streaming on Netflix , has garnered immense praise from audiences for Sanjeeda’s nuanced portrayal. Interestingly, she revealed in a recent podcast that she did not audition for the role.

During a conversation with Filmygyan, Sanjeeda shared her experience of meeting Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She recounted, “It was a brief meeting of 10 minutes, and sir mujhse 10- 15 saal pehle mil chuke the, I thought he would not remember about the meeting, but he did, and he was like, You are looking better, looking fresher, and looking happier. And then he asked me not to tell anyone about this meeting.” She left the meeting hopeful for the role.

The Unique Casting Process
Sanjeeda reminisced about the unusual casting process, stating, “There was no audition…Sir did not audition, he just called for a look test after 3-4 months of the meeting.” During the look test, the team applied prosthetics to create a scar on her face, making the process feel intense. Sanjay Leela Bhansali personally supervised the look test, guiding her through various character elements. She recalled, “I was doing everything, and suddenly he said, Ye hai meri Waheeda.”

A Glimpse into Heeramandi
Set in the 1940s amidst the struggle for independence, Heeramandi delves into the cultural essence of a significant district in pre-partition India through the perspectives of courtesans and nawabs. The star-studded series features Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sharmin Segal. Additional cast members include Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman.
