MG Windsor EV Vs Tata Curvv EV: Which Electric SUV Is Right For You?

As the electric vehicle (EV) market in India continues to grow, two contenders are generating significant buzz: the newly launched MG Windsor EV and the Tata Curvv EV. With prices starting from Rs 13.49 lakh for the Windsor and Rs 17.49 lakh for the Curvv, these two models are setting a high standard in the compact SUV electric segment. Let’s dive into the key differences between these two vehicles, looking at aspects such as price, design, features, and performance.

Pricing and Variants
The MG Windsor EV, MG Motor India’s latest offering, is available in three main variants: Excite, Exclusive, and Essence. The starting price for the Excite is Rs 13.49 lakh, moving up to Rs 14.49 lakh for the Exclusive and Rs 15.49 lakh for the Essence (all prices are ex-showroom and inclusive of the battery). One unique offering with the Windsor is the BaaS (Battery as a Service) Program, where the battery can be rented, starting from Rs 9.99 lakh for the base model, reducing the upfront cost significantly.

In contrast, the Tata Curvv EV is offered in five main variants, with two battery options: a 45 kWh version and a 55 kWh version. The 45 kWh version starts at Rs 17.49 lakh for the Creative variant and goes up to Rs 19.29 lakh for the Accomplished Plus S variant. Meanwhile, the 55 kWh variants range from Rs 19.25 lakh to Rs 22 lakh, with the top-spec Empowered Plus S costing the most.

Dimensions and Exterior Comparison
One of the significant factors when choosing an electric SUV is the size and road presence. The MG Windsor EV measures 4295 mm in length, 1850 mm in width, and 1677 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2700 mm. Its ground clearance stands at 186 mm, and it offers a generous 604 litres of boot space.

The Tata Curvv EV, on the other hand, is slightly longer at 4310 mm but narrower at 1810 mm. It stands shorter at 1637 mm and has a wheelbase of 2560 mm. With a ground clearance of 190 mm, the Curvv offers 500 litres of boot space. While the Curvv’s length provides it with a slightly larger road footprint, the Windsor makes up for it with increased width, more interior room, and greater boot capacity.

Feature Comparison
In terms of features, both vehicles come packed with modern technology and convenience amenities. The Windsor EV stands out with its 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. It supports wireless connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as wireless charging. Ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, rear AC vents, and a nine-speaker Infinity sound system add to its premium feel. Additionally, the Windsor features a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, and various driving modes for enhanced comfort.

The Tata Curvv EV is no slouch either. It comes with a 12.3-inch floating infotainment screen and a 320W 9-speaker JBL sound system. Its features also include a panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, and a six-way adjustable driver’s seat. Notably, the Curvv boasts a two-step rear seat recline function, adding to passenger comfort. Other features include a cooled glove box, connected car technology via the Arcade.ev app suite, and gesture-controlled powered tailgate functionality.

Safety and Technology
Both EVs prioritise safety, with six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, and various driver assistance technologies. The Windsor EV comes equipped with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera.

The Curvv EV takes things further with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include 20 features such as forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Additionally, it incorporates pedestrian safety alerts and an acoustic vehicle alert system (AVAS), making it a safer option in urban environments.

Battery and Performance
The heart of any electric vehicle is its battery and motor performance. The MG Windsor EV comes with a 38 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a front-axle-mounted motor producing 136 hp and 200 Nm of torque. With four driving modes (Eco+, Eco, Normal, and Sport), the Windsor claims a range of 331 km on a full charge. Charging times vary: using a 45 kW fast charger, the battery can charge from 0 to 80% in just 55 minutes, while a 7.7 kW AC charger will take 6.5 hours for a full charge.

The Tata Curvv EV offers two battery options: a 45 kWh battery with a claimed range of 502 km and a 55 kWh battery with a 585 km range. In real-world conditions, these figures translate to approximately 350 km and 425 km, respectively. The Curvv’s electric motor produces 167 hp and enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km/h. Moreover, its fast-charging capability allows it to add 150 km of range in just 15 minutes.

Final Thoughts: Which EV Stands Out?
Both the MG Windsor EV and Tata Curvv EV offer exceptional value for buyers looking to make the shift to electric mobility. The Windsor is more affordable, with a competitive starting price and a host of premium features that make it an appealing choice for budget-conscious buyers. Its BaaS Program also makes it a unique option for those not wanting to commit to a full battery purchase.

The Tata Curvv EV, while pricier, provides longer ranges and slightly better performance figures, making it ideal for those who frequently travel longer distances. Its enhanced safety features, including Level 2 ADAS, offer peace of mind for safety-conscious buyers.

Ultimately, the choice between these two vehicles will come down to your priorities: budget and practicality or performance and cutting-edge technology.
