BMW iX1 LWB Offers Bigger Cabin, Longer Range & A Surprisingly Affordable Price

BMW has taken a bold step forward in India’s electric vehicle market with the launch of the new iX1 long-wheelbase (LWB) electric SUV. Combining enhanced cabin space, a higher claimed range and a surprisingly accessible price point, the iX1 LWB is poised to challenge traditional notions of luxury EV pricing. With a starting price of ₹49 lakh (ex-showroom), it undercuts both its own petrol-powered sibling and the earlier standard iX1 EV, despite offering more practicality. So, how does this reworked model balance cost-cutting and comfort? Here’s a closer look.

More Room to Stretch Out
The most visible change in the iX1 LWB lies in its increased dimensions. While the overall styling sticks closely to BMW’s familiar design language, the long-wheelbase version extends the body by 116 mm, with 108 mm of that directly added to the wheelbase. This tweak pays off significantly in rear-seat comfort, an important factor for Indian customers who often value spacious rear cabins.

Thanks to this stretch, rear passengers benefit from noticeably improved legroom. The nearly flat floor, a design advantage of many EVs, further enhances comfort for three occupants in the back. The seat itself is supportive, offering a reclining backrest of up to 28.5 degrees, and ample under-thigh cushioning, making longer journeys more pleasant. BMW has clearly put thought into making the LWB version more family and chauffeur-friendly without losing its premium essence.

Interior Upgrades with a Familiar Touch
Step inside the iX1 LWB and you’ll find an interior that leans on BMW’s premium cues, with mocha brown upholstery and sporty M detailing on the door sills and steering wheel. The dual-screen layout makes a strong impression—combining a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system into a sleek, curved panel.

The cabin is packed with features including a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control and a high-quality 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system pushing out 205 watts. While these features match what buyers expect in this segment, it’s the additional rear seat space that’s likely to win favour in the Indian context.

How BMW Kept the Price in Check
One of the most interesting aspects of the iX1 LWB is its pricing strategy. Despite the added space and similar feature list, this version is priced significantly lower than the outgoing standard iX1 EV. This naturally raises questions—how did BMW manage to bring down the cost?

The answer lies in the drivetrain. The previous iX1 used a dual-motor setup offering all-wheel drive, which added complexity and cost. The new LWB version shifts to a single-motor layout with front-wheel drive. This not only helps cut costs but also leads to a noticeable increase in range. While power drops to 205 hp and 250 Nm of torque, the vehicle is now capable of delivering a claimed 535 km on a full charge. In real-world conditions, drivers can expect around 415 to 420 km, which is more than enough for daily urban use and weekend getaways.

Charging and Battery Performance
Equipped with a 66.4 kWh battery pack, the iX1 LWB supports rapid charging. With a 130 kW DC fast charger, the battery can be topped up from 10 to 80 percent in just 29 minutes. For quick stops, a 10-minute charge can offer roughly 120 km of range, adding an element of convenience for users with tight schedules or long commutes.

Driving Dynamics: Does It Still Feel Like a BMW?
A major concern with any cost-optimised model from a performance-oriented brand like BMW is whether it still drives like one. In this case, the iX1 LWB may not have the same rear-wheel-drive thrills associated with traditional BMWs, but it still retains the brand’s fundamental driving feel.

Acceleration is immediate, thanks to the instant torque delivery that electric motors are known for. The 250 Nm of torque kicks in from the start, giving the SUV enough punch to satisfy most urban drivers. While it might not offer tail-happy handling, the steering remains accurate, and the car stays composed in corners and at higher speeds, maintaining that ‘BMW feel’ many buyers seek.

A Few Misses, But Still a Win
Despite the impressive package, a few areas leave room for improvement. Regenerative braking settings are tucked away within the infotainment system, requiring multiple taps to adjust. Paddle shifters to manage regen levels more intuitively would have been a welcome addition. Also, while it features a rear camera, the omission of a 360-degree view might disappoint tech-savvy users, especially given its luxury billing.

A More Attainable Entry into the BMW World
BMW’s move to introduce a longer, more efficient, and more affordable iX1 in India is strategic. The company has also rolled out attractive finance offers including low EMIs and guaranteed buyback programmes, reducing entry barriers for younger, aspirational buyers. For many, this could now be a first realistic opportunity to own a BMW without compromising on space or comfort.

The BMW iX1 LWB brings more than just added length to the table. It redefines value in the premium EV space by offering more for less—more space, more range, and a more accessible price tag. While it does sacrifice a bit of power and the thrill of all-wheel-drive dynamics, it remains a compelling choice for those seeking a luxurious, spacious, and well-equipped electric SUV. For Indian buyers ready to step into the world of BMWs, the iX1 LWB makes a powerful case.
