Paris Olympics: Samoa's boxing coach Lionel Elika Fatupaito tragically dies at Olympic village

NEW DELHI: The International Boxing Association (IBA) announced on Saturday that Lionel Elika Fatupaito , the national boxing coach of Samoa , passed away at the age of 60 during the ongoing Paris Olympics .

According to reports from Samoan media outlets, the unfortunate incident occurred on Friday while Fatupaito was at the Olympic Village.

In its statement, the IBA expressed heartfelt condolences to Fatupaito's family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging his dedication and passion for the sport of boxing.

"We at the IBA extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lionel Elika Fatupaito , the national boxing coach of Samoa, who tragically passed away during Paris 2024," the IBA said in a statement

The association recognized that Fatupaito's legacy would continue to inspire future generations of boxers.

"Lionel's dedication and passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with Team Samoa and all those affected by this profound loss," it added.

Samoa's sole representative in the Olympic boxing competition is heavyweight boxer Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali , a two-time Pacific Games champion. Plodzicki-Faoagali is scheduled to face Victor Schelstraete of Belgium on Sunday.

The Olympic boxing events are taking place at the North Paris Arena and Roland Garros from July 27 to August 10. The IBA's statement conveyed thoughts and prayers for Team Samoa and all those affected by this profound loss.

Fatupaito's untimely demise has undoubtedly cast a shadow over Samoa's participation in the Paris Olympics. However, the boxing community and the Olympic spirit will likely honour his memory and continue to celebrate the sport he dedicated his life to.
