Onam is a unique festival of cultural beauty, which is observed in the state of Kerala in India to welcome back King Mahabali . It also commemorates the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu, the Vamana avatar.
As per mythology, Indra dev and other deities sought Lord Vishnu's help after they got defeated by Mahabali, the king of the asuras. To do this, lord Vishnu took Vamana avatar. During a puja, Vamana requests for three steps of land to build a fire altar to which Mahabali agrees. Vamana grows in size and covers the entire universe and beyond in just three steps. Hence, Mahabali was asked to leave and because he was very fond of his kingdom, he was granted a wish to visit his kingdom once every year. This celebration is called Onam.
This is celebrated for a period of ten days in the months of August-September and is a great mix of tradition, community and fun. Preparations for the celebration of Onam usually start early. Houses are decorated with colourful flowers in the style called ‘Pookalam’. These flower carpets not only enhance the beauty of the onam festival but also act as a prayer mat for the King mahabali. The custom of wearing traditional Kerala clothes like the white mundu and the sari becomes common as families put on their best to celebrate the day. Onam is a great time of the year because of the celebration and the captivating feast which is popularly known as 'Sadya.' Here the lavish spread essentially consists of only vegetarian food items that include rice, sambar, avial, payasam, etc. and are all served on a banana leaf.
