A remarkable discovery in the western Himalayas has led to the identification of a new snake species , aptly named Anguiculus DiCaprio , or "DiCaprio's Himalayan snake," in honour of Hollywood actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio . Found during a 2020 expedition by a collaborative team of researchers from India, Germany, and the United Kingdom, this viper species showcases unique characteristics that distinguish it from others in its family.

The study, recently published in Scientific Reports, emphasises DiCaprio's significant contributions to conservation efforts and climate change awareness. This exciting find not only enhances our understanding of Himalayan biodiversity but also underscores the importance of continued research and conservation initiatives in preserving such extraordinary species amid growing environmental threats.

New snake species of genus Anguiculus

The team’s findings were recently published in Scientific Reports, a peer-reviewed journal. The new snake species was classified under a new genus, Anguiculus, which means "small snake" in Latin. The specific epithet "DiCaprio" was chosen to honour Leonardo DiCaprio for his commitment to environmental causes, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution-related health issues.

DiCaprio’s active involvement in raising awareness about environmental issues and his financial support for field conservation and research were highlighted as reasons for this tribute. The study also suggested the common name "DiCaprio’s Himalayan snake" to further commemorate his contributions.

Anguiculus DiCaprioi ’ discovery in the Himalayas

During their expedition to the western Himalayas, specifically in Himachal Pradesh, the researchers encountered brown-coloured snakes basking on a mud road. The snakes remained still and made no attempt to bite when captured. Through DNA analysis and comparison with other snake species, the team confirmed the discovery of this new species.

In addition to Himachal Pradesh, the species has been found in Nainital, Uttarakhand, and Chitwan National Park, Nepal. HT Lalremsanga, a professor at Mizoram University and part of the research team, explained that Anguiculus DiCaprio lives at elevations of around 6,000 feet.

Physical characteristics of Anguiculus DiCaprio

The new species, which grows up to 22 inches, features a broad collar with small dark brown spots, a robust skull, and a steeply domed snout. It also has dozens of teeth, making it distinct from other viper species.
The research team consisted of Zeeshan A Mirza, Virender K Bhardwaj, Saunak Pal, Gernot Vogel, Patrick D Campbell, and Harshil Patel. Their work not only adds to the knowledge of Himalayan biodiversity but also emphasises the critical need for ongoing research and conservation in this vulnerable region. The discovery of Anguiculus dicaprio is a significant milestone in herpetology and a reminder of the importance of protecting such unique species in the face of climate change and human encroachment.
