DoE issues guidelines for implementing 10 'Bagless Days' in Delhi schools: 5 fun activities schools can conduct

On Tuesday, the Directorate of Education (DoE) issued guidelines to implement 10 "bagless days" in both government and private schools across Delhi. The initiative targets students from classes 6 to 8 and is part of a broader effort to make learning more experiential and stress-free, as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The guidelines, developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), are aimed at creating a joyful and hands-on learning environment for students.

According to the DoE, all school heads have been directed to incorporate these bagless days into the academic calendar. "Activities must be carefully selected to ensure that the resources available to the schools are utilized optimally. Bagless activities, including those conducted during the Happiness Curriculum or through excursions, may be integrated into these days," reads the official circular, as reported by PTI.

The guidelines encourage schools to organize educational visits to historical monuments, cultural sites, craft centers, and places of tourist interest. Additionally, students may interact with local artists and craftsmen, helping them gain a deeper understanding of various crafts, traditions, and the importance of cultural heritage preservation. Such activities are intended to broaden students' horizons and make learning more meaningful beyond the classroom.

Earlier in July, the Union Ministry of Education had also notified similar guidelines for the implementation of bagless days for classes 6 to 8. Developed by the PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education (a unit of NCERT), these guidelines emphasize joyful learning through vocational exposure. During the 10 bagless days, students will have the opportunity to intern with local vocational experts such as carpenters, gardeners, potters, and others, gaining practical skills and insight into various professions.

The initiative aligns with the NEP 2020 ’s objective of promoting holistic, multidisciplinary education and reducing the academic pressure on students by integrating real-world learning experiences into the curriculum, as reported by PTI.
