MADURAI: A minor fire broke out in the under-construction new air traffic control (ATC) cum technical block at Madurai airport around 2.30pm on Friday. No casualty or injury was reported.

Airport director P Muthu Kumar told TOI that smoke was first observed on the ground floor of the building, where newly purchased AC units and windowpanes were stored.

The fire was extinguished within an hour, by the in-house airport fire team and with assistance from the state fire service department.

The cause of the fire would be determined after an investigation, added Muthu Kumar.

The bhoomi puja for the ATC cum watchtower was performed in March 2022. The Rs 84crore project, featuring a 44.9-metre-tall tower equipped with state-of-the-art technology, is expected to be completed within two years from the start of construction.
