Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped the city when a car suddenly burst into flames on NH-16 in front of Nayapalli Durga Puja pandal, on Tuesday evening. No person was injured.

Sources said the car was going from Baramunda towards Rasulgarh when the engine caught fire. Upon noticing the fire, the occupants of the car swiftly exited the vehicle.

The owner of the car, who was on the driver’s seat, later told the media that they were returning after visiting Udayagiri.

As they approached Nayapalli, he realised that the brakes had malfunctioned, and when he attempted to slow down, a fire engulfed the engine.

“We are from Bihar and had come to visit Puri and Bhubaneswar. I was accompanied by my wife, mother and two sisters. As soon as we realised a fire had started, we promptly came out of the car,” he said.

“After getting information, we pressed our fire tenders and extinguished the blaze. However, the car was completely gutted. The reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” said deputy fire officer Abani Swain.
