Bhubaneswar: In a respite for commuters travelling on the Cuttack-Puri Road, city authorities have initiated an extensive restoration work of this crucial arterial road after an extended period of two years.

This vital thoroughfare, particularly between Rasulgarh and Kalpana Square, was replete with potholes, uneven surfaces and other issues for a considerable time, with the recent downpour aggravating the situation.

TOI, on Sept 30, highlighted the state of the road and the issues faced by commuters. Residents of areas like Rasulgarh, Bomikhal, Laxmisagar and Old Station Bazaar, among others, were the main sufferers.

“The craters and uneven patches on the road have led to numerous minor and fatal accidents on this stretch in the past. A doctor lost his life near Bomikhal flyover last year when his vehicle overturned after falling in a pothole,” said Bomikhal resident Ajay Kumar Jena.

Residents and other commuters who use the road for their daily commute have expressed satisfaction with the quality of repair work carried out on the road this time by the authorities, which includes complete resurfacing with lane and road markings.

“The road experiences a diverse traffic flow, but there was a lack of discipline in riding due to the absence of road and lane markings. After years, I have witnessed the reappearance of markings on the road,” said Badagada resident Rakesh Mohanty.

However, the Cuttack-Puri Road still lacks several essential provisions, such as adequate footpaths, bicycle tracks and a stormwater drainage system, primarily due to a lack of space to incorporate these features.

Mayor Sulochana Das said they have collaborated with the public works department and accomplished the repair work on the road, but due to the lack of space, it is unfeasible to construct parallel cycle tracks and footpaths along the stretch.

“The housing and urban development department, in coordination with the works department, is devising a plan to establish a stormwater drainage system on the stretch to mitigate waterlogging issues at different sections of the road,” she added.
