Donald Trump slammed for 'playing Monopoly with healthcare' after 'crazy' announcement
In a shocking revelation, CNN has reported that President Donald Trump is planning to impose a 100% tariff on imported drugs from the 1st of October.
The news was shared on X, previously known as Twitter, where Trump's post on Truth Social was cited. The president declared his intention to levy a 100% tariff on all pharmaceuticals imported into the U.S., unless the company is constructing their pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in America.
According to the Census Bureau, last year saw nearly $233 billion worth of pharmaceutical and medicinal products imported into the U.S..
This new policy could potentially cause numerous problems and is likely to make essential healthcare even less affordable for Americans. This follows Trump's earlier move this year to increase tariffs on imported goods, which resulted in a rise in the price of essential groceries, reports The Mirror US.
Following CNN's announcement of the news, many voiced their concerns over this contentious decision. One individual commented, "bro playing Monopoly with the healthcare system."
Another person chimed in, "Remember the old saying sticks and stones may break my bones but tariffs are a tax on the people. Or something like that. The point is that some people never learn. Or care. This is a one man demolition of the economy."
A third person added, "This is crazy; how is it possible to just give them 4 days to build manufacturing plants in the US? Americans middle class again will bear the blunt of this - as usual."
One individual commented, "I normally laugh at how Trump doesn't understand tariffs, but this isn't funny. His lack of intelligence is going to be responsible for many deaths because of this. Is everyone too scared to explain to him how it works?".
Another person sarcastically retorted, "Thank you President Trump. I am willing to forgo taking my medications (since I won't be able to afford them) for a few years till these plants are built. I just hope, like millions of others, that I'm still alive to see them."
Trump's full announcement stated, "Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America. 'IS BUILDING' will be defined as, 'breaking ground' and/or 'under construction.' There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has started. Thank you for your attention to this matter!".
Following Trump's announcement, numerous experts have voiced concerns about the damaging knock-on effects this decision could trigger. Healthcare professionals have highlighted potential issues such as a surge in medication prices, increased costs for Medicare and Medicaid, medication shortages, and a decrease in investment towards pharmaceutical research and development.
