The most-watched new streaming series of this week might come as a surprise.

Despite Netflix being the world's most popular streaming platform by far, the current chart-topper isn't found in its library.

This critically acclaimed science fiction horror series has allegedly overtaken Netflix's biggest successes from recent weeks.

Wednesday season two, Hostage and My Life With the Walter Boys' audience figures are all being dwarfed by Alien: Earth, according to the Samba TV Wrap report.

From creator Noah Hawley, this fresh take on the legendary Alien franchise launched on 12th August and has rapidly emerged as one of this year's most significant television phenomena, reports the Mirror.

Indeed, this week the programme has ended Netflix's remarkable 11-week reign at the summit.

Whilst the streaming behemoth still allegedly boasts seven entries in the current streaming top 10, Alien: Earth is seemingly the programme capturing everyone's attention as we bid farewell to summer.

This also marks the first occasion a Hulu production has claimed the top spot since last year's celebrated historical drama Shogun.

Beyond earning glowing reviews from critics, the prequel series has also exceeded the hopes of devoted Alien enthusiasts.

One viewer declared in an enthusiastic five-star Google review: "This is one of the most incredible shows I have ever seen!

"What an amazing start, super engaging story, great character building, and the dread in the show, the amazing callbacks.

"This is more than I expected, and being a huge Alien fan, I'm so excited and super pumped for the next episode! This is incredible sci-fi!!!"

Another gushed: "I was glued to the screen, giddy the whole way through.

"So far, the creators have nailed the Aliens atmosphere and visual style (Music choices and retro-futurism appreciated!), offering just enough tasty bits to keep you craving more.

"Two episodes in, I'm completely hooked, and I can't wait to see where it goes next."

And a final fan awarded the series an "easy 10/10", writing: "This series is exceptional. From the moment the show starts, you're hooked.

"The story is a masterclass in building tension, the cast is phenomenal, and the special effects are just incredible.

"They really don't hold back on the 'blood baths' you'd hope for in a show like this. The aliens are terrifying, and the action is visceral and intense."

Five gripping episodes of the series have been released so far, with three more coming up over the next three weeks.

Now Alien: Earth has knocked Netflix off its perch, there's also a strong possibility the series will continue with a second season.

Alien: Earth continues Tuesdays on FX on Hulu in the US and Wednesdays on Disney+ in the UK.
