New Indian Consulate Opens in Brisbane, Strengthening Ties with Queensland
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the new Consulate General of India in Brisbane on November 4, 2024. This new consulate aims to enhance India's relationship with Queensland, boost trade, and support the Indian diaspora in the region.
With this addition, India now has four consulates in Australia, alongside the High Commission in Canberra and consulates in Melbourne and Sydney. Jaishankar emphasized that the opening of the consulate fulfills a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the transformation of India-Australia ties.
Following the inauguration, Jaishankar expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Delighted to formally inaugurate the new Consulate General of India in Brisbane today. It will contribute to strengthening India’s ties with Queensland state, promoting trade, fostering educational linkages, and serving the diaspora.”
Jeannette Young, the Governor of Queensland, attended the inauguration ceremony.
Additionally, the Indian High Commission in Canberra announced that the Indian Passport and Visa Services Centre in Brisbane is now fully operational, accepting applications across all categories. Jaishankar's visit to Australia, scheduled from November 3 to 7, also includes co-chairing the 15th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra.
