Ingredients of Malai Modak

1 cup fresh cream (malai) or heavy cream
1/2 cup milk powder
1/2 cup condensed milk
1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder (elaichi)
1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)

A few saffron strands (optional, for garnish)
Chopped pistachios or almonds (optional, for garnish)

How to Make Malai Modak

To begin, heat a non-stick pan over low to medium flame and add a teaspoon of ghee. Once the ghee melts, add fresh cream (malai) and stir continuously to prevent it from sticking to the pan. After about 2-3 minutes, gradually mix in the milk powder and condensed milk, stirring the mixture to ensure it blends well. Continue stirring for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens and starts to leave the sides of the pan, forming a soft dough-like consistency.


Once the mixture has thickened, add the cardamom powder and stir to incorporate the fragrant spice. For an extra touch of flavor, you can also add saffron strands at this stage. Remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. When it's cool enough to handle, grease your hands with a bit of ghee or oil. Take small portions of the mixture and shape them into Modaks using a Modak mold, or shape them by hand into small dumplings with a conical top.

For added richness and color, you can garnish the Modaks with chopped pistachios or almonds, and a few saffron strands if you like. Once the Modaks are shaped and garnished, let them cool completely before serving or offering them to Lord Ganesha. These Malai Modaks can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, allowing you to savor their creamy sweetness throughout your Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
