Was BTS's Jin's role as a torchbearer at the 2024 Summer Olympics funded by the Korean government? Here's the truth

BTS’s Jin recently had the honor of participating in the torch relay for the 2024 Summer Olympics , an event that garnered immense pride from ARMY and South Koreans alike. His role as a torchbearer was seen as a significant moment of national representation on a global stage. However, this prestigious opportunity sparked controversy when rumors emerged questioning the legitimacy of his selection. Japanese media reports speculated that the Korean government might have financially supported Jin’s involvement in the event.

In reality, the selection process for Olympic torchbearers follows a well-established protocol. Individuals are chosen based on recommendations from the Olympic Organizing Committee, official sponsors, or local government entities. For instance, renowned figures such as French soccer star Thierry Henry and Chinese actress Tang Wei were recommended by the organizing committee and a sponsoring partner, respectively. Even Snoop Dogg’s role as a torchbearer was facilitated by the local government in Saint-Denis.

Jin’s selection was officially endorsed by Samsung Electronics, a key sponsor of the Summer Olympics. The company clarified that, “they recommended Jin, Samsung’s public relations ambassador, as he had been active in a spirit that fits that of the Olympics”, as quoted by Koreaboo. Additionally, Yoo Seung Min, a member of the International Olympic Committee, emphasized that the Korean government had no involvement in the selection process, underscoring that such decisions are not influenced by state intervention. The government itself has confirmed its non-involvement, further debunking the claims of financial inducement for Jin’s participation.
