Donald Trump switches from Diet Coke to regular Coke: Which is better?
Donald Trump's love for Diet Coke is well-known. The former President reportedly indulges in 12 cans a day, perhaps to compensate for his teetotaler ways. But recently, he left social media users scratching their heads when he was seen sipping regular Coke , igniting debate on whether he did it to avoid aspartame , the artificial sweetener that recently came under scanner for possibly being carcinogenic to humans, apart from other adverse effects for overall health.
Diet Coke has become a popular choice for many due to the allure of zero calories and being sugar-free, which makes it seem like a safe alternative to sugar-loaded regular Coke. As per CDC, sugary drinks are linked to weight gain, obesity , type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease, tooth decay and cavities, and gout, a type of arthritis. However, excess Diet Coke consumption can still increase risk of type 2 diabetes, kidney and liver toxicity, and certain types of cancer.
A study published in the journal Physiology & Behaviour, brain reacts to artificial sweeteners much like it does to sugary sweets. Having them frequently may make you crave for high-calorie foods, which can put you at risk of obesity.
The problem with Diet CokeExperts warn that while Diet Coke may be better than regular Coke for calorie control, it poses it own health hazards due to presence of artificial sweeteners.
"Regular Coke is often preferred for its rich, sugary taste. For many, it’s the quintessential soda experience. The sugar content in regular Coke can provide a rapid energy boost, which can be beneficial in certain situations where quick energy is needed," says Parmeet Kaur, Head & Chief Nutritionist & Dietician, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram.
Kaur says Diet Coke has no calories, which makes it an attractive option for those looking to reduce their caloric intake .
"For individuals trying to manage their weight, Diet Coke can be a way to enjoy a soda without the added calories and sugar," adds Kaur.
While added sugar has emerged as one of the biggest health risks , the presence of aspartame, the artificial sweetener, which has been tagged as potential carcinogenic when consumed in excess, has made people wary of consuming Diet Coke, which is often promoted as a health drink.
"Aspartame and other sweeteners in Diet Coke are controversial, with some studies suggesting they may alter gut bacteria, impact glucose tolerance, or even increase cravings for sugary foods," says Bengaluru-based fitness and wellness coach, Vijay Kumar.
Research suggests excessive Diet Coke consumption might reduce bone mineral density due to phosphoric acid, which can weaken bones over time. Some studies link artificial sweeteners with an increased risk of metabolic disorders, though research is ongoing.
The many adverse health effects of regular Coke
However, in moderation Diet Coke is a better option that regular Coke as the latter has worrying amounts of sugar.
"A single can of regular Coke contains about 39 grams of sugar, which is nearly 10 teaspoons. Consuming high amounts of sugar can lead to weight gain, increased risk of type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic issues," notes Kaur.

Besides, it's just calories without any nutritional value. The high sugar content can also contribute to tooth decay and other dental problems, says the expert.
Diet Coke, a better choice?Diet Coke on the other hand contains no calories, making it a popular choice for those watching their weight or managing diabetes.
"Since it uses artificial sweeteners like aspartame, it doesn’t cause the blood sugar spikes associated with regular Coke," says Kumar.
Also, without sugar, Diet Coke is less likely to contribute to tooth decay, although it still contains acids that may impact enamel.
Whether you are consuming regular or diet coke occasionally, it's important to add nutrient-rich foods to your diet, stay hydrated, and restrict your consumption. It's better to find healthy alternatives like lemon water, green tea, coconut water, sugar-free iced tea, and fruit-infused water.
