Doctors remove 16-inch gourd from farmer's rectum in MP, caused internal injuries

A team of doctors at Chhatarpur district hospital in Madhya Pradesh successfully removed a 16-inch gourd from the body of a farmer after a two-hour surgery on July 21. The man, who arrived in critical condition from Khajuraho, had been experiencing severe abdominal pain. Upon examination, doctors discovered the gourd had entered his body through the rectum , causing internal injuries .

The surgical team, led by Dr. Nandkishore Jatav, performed the complex operation to extract the gourd. Following the operation, the patient was declared out of danger. The circumstances of how the gourd entered the man's body remain unclear. Investigations are ongoing, with possibilities including that the patient might suffer from a mental illness that led to this incident.

Dr. Jatav recounted the series of events, noting the patient's initial visit to another medical facility before coming to the district hospital.

"The night before last, a patient from the Khajuraho area arrived with abdominal pain. Around 3:30 am, he first went to the Mission Hospital, where the doctor refused to treat him. Subsequently, he came to the district hospital." Dr. Jatav said.

The examination revealed that the patient had inserted a gourd into his rectum, leading to severe pain and internal trauma. The surgery not only involved removing the gourd but also addressing the ruptures in the patient's internal membranes.

"He was admitted and operated on, during which the membrane ruptured. With the assistance of two other doctors, a gourd approximately one and a half feet long was removed," Dr. Jatav detailed.

Despite the successful operation, the patient has not yet disclosed how the gourd got into his body. Dr. Jatav mentioned this ongoing uncertainty.

"The patient has not disclosed whether he inserted the gourd himself or if there was another reason," he added. The entire case is under further investigation."
