Whenever we take cash, we take a look at the note to see if it is torn or not. Because the shopkeeper also refuses to accept these notes. In such a situation, we are very cautious about the notes. Now the question arises of what to do if a torn note is found in the ATM. Can damaged or torn notes be changed or not? The answer to this question has been given by the Central Bank (RBI) itself. The Reserve Bank of India has issued rules regarding torn notes.
According to the RBI rule, torn notes can be easily changed by going to the bank or RBI office. However, RBI also has some guidelines of its own for changing the note. We will tell you about this rule of RBI in detail in this article.
What to do with torn notes from ATM?
If you ever get torn notes from the ATM, you can easily get them changed. You have to go to the same bank from whose ATM this note has been withdrawn. Now you will have to go to the bank and submit an application in which you will give the date, day, and time of note withdrawal. Apart from this, you will also have to provide information about the location and address of the ATM. After giving all this information, you also have to attach the slip taken out from the ATM. Now after submitting the application and the note, the bank will give you another note of the same value.
What is the rule of RBI?
According to the rules of the Reserve Bank of India, only that note will be considered damaged which has been damaged due to regular use. If the note has been torn into two pieces but the important information written on it has not been damaged or disappeared, then the customer can easily go to a government bank, private bank, or RBI office and get it changed. At all these places, they will not need to fill out any form for note exchange.
These notes will not be changed.
The Reserve Bank of India also said that in some situations the note will not be changed. According to the rules, if a note is more than 50 percent damaged, then it will not be changed. Apart from this, if the note is burnt or has been broken into many pieces, then also it will not be changed. There is a number on every note and even if Gandhiji's watermark is not clear, the note will not be changed.
