What Happened To Julius Juukulius In Re:Zero?

Hero Image

Julius is the knight in shining armor in Re:Zero – the complete opposite of Subaru when it comes to maintaining chivalry and decorum.

However, even the finest of knights sometimes go through the harshest of times. That is the best way to describe what happened to Julius at the end of Arc 5 in Re:Zero.

Let’s try to get a better hang of the situation.

What happened to Julius in Re:Zero Season 3?

To answer in short, Julius’ name was consumed by the Archbishop of Gluttony, ) while they were fighting.

Julius and Ricardo were tasked with fighting and fending off Roy Alphard, who was among the Witch Cultists who attacked Priestella city.

During the battle, Roy manages to seriously injure Ricardo (who lost an arm) and also eat Julius’ name. And due to this, he was erased from the minds of everyone. Meaning, no one recognized Julius, except our special knight – Subaru Natsuki.

However, Julius himself is awake, and retains his memories. This is very different from the two victims of Gluttony we saw before in the series.

In by Lye Batenkaitos. If both the name and memories are stolen, as with Rem, the victim enters an unresponsive, comatose state (because without a name they are forgotten by the world, and without memories they lose their sense of self).

And in Crusch’s case, only her memories were stolen, and her name was not. Meaning, everyone else remembers Crusch, however, she herself suffers from an amnesia like situation, where she doesn’t remember anything about herself. This brought about a complete change in her personality.

Now, compared to Rem and Crusch, it is easy to assume that Julius has it easy. However, he is traumatized by the fact that his friends and his comrades no longer remembered him.

The psychological toll on Julius:

Julius essentially became a nameless knight, a man with nowhere to go and nowhere to return. If not for Subaru, it would have been easy for him to slip through the gaps and fall into a very depressed state of mind.

Unlike Rem, who isn’t conscious to feel her predicament, Julius is fully aware of his loss. We see him putting on a brave face but despite all that, he is clearly hurting. I mean, we can all notice the sad dialogues he kept dropping throughout arc 6. He was emoboi.

This becomes even more visible in Arc 6, as Julius keeps questioning himself. Without his titles, without his achievements, without his powers, who is he really?

Because, it is not just the people who forgot him, even the spirits that he had formed a contract with didn’t recognize him. Meaning he had lost his flashy powers too.

So, all that was left was his sword, and the years of training that he put into it. We see him lose his usual confidence as his demeanor comes undone a couple of times.

Human identity is inherently relational—we understand who we are largely through interactions, recognition, and validation from others. When these external anchors vanish abruptly, it threatens core aspects of psychological well-being. And that’s exactly what happened with Julius.

All the memories he had, all the relationships he had built, they no longer held any value.

True, he had the option of rebuilding his relationships with everyone, but that’s easier said that done. Watching a close friend or a comrade become a stranger in the blink of an eye certainly takes a toll. Without social acknowledgment, humans risk becoming psychologically invisible even to themselves – and this was even more true in Julius’ case.

But, despite a lengthy blip, Julius does come out all guns firing – thanks to Subaru’s help, and also thanks to his superb determination. His character development in arc 6 is amazing, and is something that you should totally check out!

Does Julius get his name back?

Julius sets off to the Pleiades tower along with Subaru and others in order to find a way to restore the victims of Gluttony and Lust. And when they reach there, they end up facing off both Roy Alphard and Lye Batenkaitos again.

While Ram succeeds in defeating and killing Lye, Roy is defeated and captured alive.

With Lye’s death, Rem wakes up, meaning she got her name back. Even Emilia – whose name was consumed by Lye in Arc 6 – gets it back once he dies.

However, that doesn’t happen for Julius. Even at the end of Arc 6, nobody remembers Julius.

One reason for this could be because Roy was the one who ate Julius’ name. And since he has been captured for interrogation, and not killed, the effects of Gluttony’s Authority could still be lingering.

However, even though Lye is no longer alive, Rem didn’t make a complete recovery, so our assumption might not be completely true.

When yours truly finishes reading Arcs 7 and 8, the status of Julius and his stolen name will be updated!!
