Tomoki Izumi’s Mieruko-Chan manga is getting a live-action film set to release in the early summer of 2025 in Japan.

An official website and X account have been launched for the live-action film, which unveiled a teaser visual featuring Nanoka Hara, who has been cast to play the role of the protagonist Miko Yotsuya.

Yoshihiro Nakamura is serving as the director as well as the scriptwriter for the film.

Nanoka Hara expressed her excitement about the role, saying, “I’m Nanoka Hara, and I’ll be playing Miko Yotsuya in the live-action film Mieruko-chan. I remember being really happy when I was offered the role of Miko. I was instantly captivated by how unique and interesting the premise was. It’s a horror film, yet my role is to simply ignore the ghosts, which made me laugh out loud while reading the script. Working with Nakamura-sensei was both nerve-wracking and exciting. When he would give directions on set, he always ran up close and gave instructions while looking me straight in the eye, even though he’s such a big-name director. He even told us that he wasn’t fond of horror, but his cheerful demeanor made the filming experience a lot of fun. I believe this will be a completely new kind of horror film, packed with youth, comedy, and human drama, and I hope everyone looks forward to it!

Tomoki Izumi also commented on the film, stating, “When I first heard about the film adaptation, I was honestly half-excited and half-nervous because manga and live-action films are very different in terms of medium and expression. But as soon as I heard that Yoshihiro Nakamura would be directing, my excitement shot up. I love Dark Water and The Inerasable, so I couldn’t wait to see his new horror film. When Nanoka Hara was cast as Miko, it felt right, and I could easily imagine her playing a normal high school girl who ignores ghosts, so I wasn’t worried. When I visited the filming set and saw so many people involved, it was very inspiring. And when I met Hara-san on set, I couldn’t help but blurt out, ‘That’s Miko!’ because she syncs so perfectly with the character. I’m really excited to see what kind of new film it will turn out to be, in a way that’s different from the original Mieruko-chan manga.

Mieruko-Chan began serialization online via Kadokawa’s ComicWalker website in November 2018, with ten tankōbon volumes released so far. The manga is licensed in North America by Yen Press.

An anime television series adaptation by Passione aired from October to December 2021.
