Japanese game developer Game Freak had announced recently that it had suffered a significant data breach in August 2024 due to unauthorized third-party access to its servers.

What has stirred the most reaction online, however, are the disturbing pieces of lore concerning the Pokémon universe that surfaced in the wake of the breach.

While the authenticity of these leaked materials remains unconfirmed, they have nonetheless spread rapidly across online platforms.

One of the most unsettling elements brought to light through a post by Centro Leaks on X (formerly Twitter) involves lore suggesting that humans and Pokémon once had questionable relationships with each other.

Naturally, questions were raised about the world building of the series.

The leaked Pokémon lores are titled:

  • Original Sin Based on the Current Pokémon World
  • The Collapse of Culture and Relationships
  • The Relationship Between Humans and Pokémon / Human-Like Ways of Thinking
  • These stories describe an era where the boundaries between humans and Pokémon were blurred, some of which lead to unsettling interactions that resulted in hybrid offspring.

Original Sin Based on the Current Pokémon World

The first lore in the post outlined a narrative about a woman and her companions who regularly captured and tortured Slakoth in a nearby forest for fun.

The text revealed that they would engage in cruel games, often killing the Slakoth or inflicting severe injuries such as gouging out their eyes or cutting off their ears.

One fateful day, the woman encountered a Vigoroth, a Pokémon with a torn ear, which appears to be seeking revenge for the harm done to its kind. The Vigoroth attacks the woman, causing her to lose consciousness.

As the story continues, the woman is haunted by the consequences of her actions, eventually giving birth to what is described as a “Slakoth child.”

Though it was not a human child, she is unable to abandon it, ultimately deciding to raise the creature as her own.

The Collapse of Culture and Relationships

This tale tells the story of a man who repeatedly encounters an Octillery on the shore of a coastal village.

After engaging in relations with the Octillery, the Pokémon gives birth to a half-human, half-Pokémon child, which the man raises.

The story takes a turn for the worse when the child grows up lonely and isolated, witnessing disturbing events where villagers engage in strange rituals, such as playing with Sharpedo and carrying large swords.

The young man, born of a human and a Pokémon, becomes increasingly violent, using a sword he finds to harm and kill Pokémon indiscriminately.

Ultimately, the young man encounters an elderly Ursaring who cryptically helps him return to the village after a series of violent acts.

The story ends tragically, as the man gets into a fatal fight with the Ursaring, leading to both of their deaths.

The Relationship Between Humans and Pokémon / Human-Like Ways of Thinking

Another piece of leaked lore tells the story of a young girl who becomes lost in the mountains and encounters a mysterious man who offers her shelter in a cave.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that the man is, in fact, a Typhlosion in human form. The girl ends up staying with the Typhlosion for an extended period, and eventually, they form a bond that leads to the birth of a child.

The narrative culminates with the girl pleading to her father after he had killed the Typhlosion.

In her grief, the girl attempts to give life to the Typhlosion’s remains by performing a strange ritual with its eyes, voice, and heart.

The leaked lores present the Pokémon universe in a light that is vastly different from the family-friendly, adventure-filled stories fans have come to know and love.

Though Game Freak has yet to officially comment on these specific story elements, the leak has sparked a debate online.

Fans have expressed mixed emotions, including being intrigued by the mature lore, and also being disturbed by the direction these tales take.

On the other hand, some were simply happy to believe that this was a personal fan-fiction written by some employee and Game Freak.

It also raises questions about whether these stories, if true, were ever meant to be revealed to the public.

Founded by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, Game Freak is responsible for the development of the main series Pokémon games, which first launched in 1996 with Pokémon Red

and Green for the Game Boy.

The company has since developed every main installment in the Pokémon series, collaborating closely with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the franchise’s overall management and distribution.
