Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama Gets Inducted Into Harvey Awards Hall Of Fame

Late manga author Akira Toriyama, known for creating iconic works like Dragon Ball, Sand Land, and Dr. Slump, has been inducted into the prestigious Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made ahead of the Harvey Awards ceremony, which is set to take place at New York Comic Con on Friday, Oct 18, 2024.

, joins Arthur Adams, the acclaimed Marvel artist behind Uncanny X-Men

and Excalibur; Sergio Aragones, a longtime contributor to Mad magazine and creator of Groo the Wanderer; John Buscema, the late Marvel artist known for his work during the 1960s to 1980s; and Larry Hama, the writer and artist who helped build the G.I. Joe universe.

Toriyama’s Dragon Ball remains one of the most influential and widely recognized series, having spawned numerous adaptations, films, and merchandise.

In addition to the Hall of Fame inductees, the 2024 Harvey Awards will spotlight the Best Manga category, with several notable titles vying for the top prize. Winners will be announced at the New York Comic Con.

  • The Harvey Awards, one of the comic industry’s most prestigious accolades, are named after famed cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman. The awards have recognized outstanding achievements in the comics industry since 1988.

    Though Harvey Awards began way back in 1988, the Best Manga category was only added in 2018. Before that, manga were nominated alongside other comics in the “Best American Edition of Foreign Material” category.

    Hajime Isayama’s Attack On Titan bagged an award in this category back in 2014.
