The story of Thangalaan, the village leader of Veppur, who resides with his wife Gangamma and their children, is told in this film, which is set in the village in 1850 CE. In an explosive turn of events, a strong tribal lady who guards the wealth becomes enraged and seeks revenge on Thangalaan. He bargains with the British one day for a better life and assists them in finding gold in the village.
After receiving positive reviews from the Tamil public, the film was released in Hindi. In the film, Vikram plays five roles, with Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy, and Hari Krishnan. Thangalaan is directed by Pa. Ranjith, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Tamil Prabha and Azhagiya Periyavan. It is produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under the auspices of Neelam Productions and Studio Green.

Not Malavika Mohanan, was Rashmika Mandanna the first choice for the film?
Director Pa Ranjith first contacted Rashmika Mandanna for Malavika's part as Aarathi in Thangalaan, according to a News 18 report. The actress was offered the role, but she turned it down because she couldn't fit the Thangalaan dates around her other active projects.
