5 movies that'll awaken the patriot in you on Kargil Vijay Diwas

Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrated on July 26 every year, is a day of immense pride and deep reflection for every Indian. The day marks the anniversary of the Kargil War victory and celebrates the courage and sacrifice of our soldiers who fought against Pakistan in 1999 in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir in order to flush out the Pakistan Army and paramilitary troops from vacated Indian positions along the LoC. 

As we remember the brave hearts who laid down their lives in the mountains of Kargil, every Indian's heart swells with gratitude and patriotism. The day definitely calls for a tribute to our heroes. Movies based on the Kargil War   1.  LOC: Kargil

With the runtime of over four hours, JP Dutta's LOC: Kargil is based on Operation Vijay, a codename given to Indian military operation in the Kargil region to remove Pakistani intruders from the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC). The 2003 movie stars Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Sunny deol, Sunil Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan, it is one of the longest films ever made. 

2. Shershaah

Hailed as one of the best war-hero biopics, Shershaah narrates the brave story of Captain Vikram Batra, who showed immense courage, fought the Kargil war valiantly and sacrificed his life. The story was brought to life in such a beautiful and compassionate way that everyone including celebrities like Shah Rukh Kkhan were impressed. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, the film stars Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in lead roles.

3. Lakshya

Directed by Farhan Akhtra, the movie narrated the story of a directionless, jobless, and confused upper-middle class millennial who joins the Indian Army and transforms his life. The movie is set against the backdrop of the Kargil war and is said to be way ahead of its time. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, the screenplay of the movie has been written by Javed Akhtar.

4. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl 

Starring Janhvi Kapoor, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl narrates the inspiring tale of India's first female Air Force pilot who was involved in combat. She was just 24 years old when she undertook more than 40 perilous missions. She was one of six women who joined the Indian Air Force (IAF) as pilots in 1996. During the Operation Vijay, she not only helped in evacuation of the injured but she also played a crucial role in mapping enemy positions through various surveillance operations.

5. Dhoop

Starring Om Puri, Revathi, Gul Panag, Sanjay Suri and Yashpal Sharma, Dhoop is roughly based on the life of Captain Anuj Nayyar who died in the southwest sector of Tiger Hill on July 5, 1999 as part of the Kargil conflict, and was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery in the war.
